The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) reports into the OPEN Health Medical Communications (OHMC) CEO and is responsible for leading the Scientific Services department of the OHMC business unit to successfully align with the overall vision of the company. The CMO is responsible for effectively collaborating with key industry, client, and internal stakeholders and for overseeing the medical, writing, HEOR communications, and editorial components of the business including oversight of the staff within the Centers of Excellence (COEs) (Medical Communications, Publications, Learning and Development [L&D] and Independent Medical Education [IME]) to ensure that the company achieves high scientific standards. In addition to the above, the CMO is responsible for continually assessing the organizational needs of Scientific Services to ensure a robust infrastructure is maintained, identifying areas for growth and development, operationalizing processes, and productively executing tasks and initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

STRATEGIC
  • Provide strategic insights to the CEO on latest medical advances and trends that will have a direct impact on the future of the business including recommendations on how the business will need to adapt to maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace through:
    • Initiating, leading, and participating in departmental and organizational decision-making processes by providing a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; provide a fair, balanced and thoughtful approach when being sought out by others for advice and guidance
    • Providing ongoing assessment of professional development and succession plans for all members of Scientific Services while identifying areas for organization-wide continuing education. Discuss ideas with the Global Executive Management Team
    • Participating in the evaluation and assessment of competitive or complimentary companies that would fit within the overall acquisition strategy of OHMC
OPERATIONAL 
  • Oversee Scientific Services, including the medical, scientific, HEOR communications, and editorial staff across the global Medical Communications, Publications, L&D and IME COEs by:
    • Ensuring that the processes and training of Scientific Services are performed in an acceptably similar fashion across the organization
    • Liaising with OHMC department leads and participate on the Global Executive Management Team to ensure all Scientific Services functions are effectively operated, resourced, led and monitored 
    • Continuously evaluating staffing models including opportunities to expand in new geographic regions that address cost management while ensuring quality of deliverables across Scientific Services
    • Participating in ongoing medical resourcing discussions with senior medical leadership including reviewing staffing models including revenue allocation
    • Ongoing evaluation of staff development plans and goal setting to ensure staff retention across the medical team
    • Participating in ongoing monthly, quarterly, and annual forecast and budget   meetings 
    • Identifying opportunities to provide interdepartmental education and training, and be proactive in discussing an action plan for such items with other department leaders and the Global Executive Management Team
    • Be an active and energetic participant on any integration teams of newly acquired companies as opportunities and needs arise
INTERNAL LEADERSHIP
  • Lead and motivate direct reports and team members by acting as a strong role model through direct involvement and by example by:
    • Mentoring and serving as an experienced resource for other managers and senior team members within the department
    • Collaborating with key stakeholders (ie, CEO, Communications; Pubs Lead, Commercial; MedComm Lead Commercial; COO, Communications; CFO) to enhance communication channels across the organization
    • Serving as a role model across all departments in the company
    • Overseeing development of direct reports with the goal of creating leaders of the future
    • Working closely with potential new leaders by assigning appropriate opportunities for growth and development
SCIENTIFIC LEADERSHIP
  • Maintain awareness of the latest medical advances and trends, as well as new industry developments and standards by:
    • Building relationships and liaise with key industry and client stakeholders and academic thought leaders
    • Proactively partnering with Business Development, Client Services, Digital and Studio teams to develop and implement winning strategic and tactical plans
    • Continually assessing scientific support needs and recommend new positions or enhancement of existing positions that will allow for increased efficiency in Scientific Services
NEW BUSINESS
  • Effectively collaborate with Business Development team on an annual basis and as needed to brainstorm new products and service offerings, evaluate new opportunities, develop partnerships, and maximize organic growth strategies by:
    • Serving as an external scientific representative from the company at priority client or industry meetings and new business opportunities
    • Making a significant contribution to product development strategy with key existing clients (ie, top 10) and new business opportunities measured by revenue growth

POLICY AND PROCEDURE
  • Ensure compliance with company standards
  • Procure and maintain appropriate international travel documentation
  • Maintain consistent attendance 
  • Maintain timely submission of time sheets
  • Approve timesheets, expenses, and PTO for direct reports
  • Perform regular performance evaluations of direct reports
Qualifications:
  • MD, PharmD, or PhD degree
  • Minimum of 15 years’ direct involvement with pharmaceutical medical affairs, or senior management and account responsibility in an agency providing medical affairs support to pharmaceutical companies

Knowledge/Skills Requirements
  • Experience and understanding of medical communications, publication planning, learning and development, HEOR, medical information, medical science liaison materials and tools, and medical education
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Experience developing and establishing new products and services offerings
  • Highly successful relationship initiator and builder – resilient personality that capitalizes on every opportunity that is presented
  • Strong leadership skills with expertise in guiding and inspiring others to succeed
  • Proven managerial expertise, including personnel management experience
  • Proven experience in forecasting staffing needs across a global organization including various staffing models based on geographic regions to optimize quality and profitability
  • Proven experience in striking the right balance between office-based and contract workers. Ability to initiate discussions with appropriate balance in communicating initiatives as well as welcoming ideas from others
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical medical affairs operations
  • Proven ability to manage people for gains in productivity and client satisfaction
  • Ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing challenges, issues, and priorities with the ability to delegate and set clear expectations
  • Working knowledge of basic Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and other project management software
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team structure

Working conditions:
  • This position will be performed either as a remote position or in a corporate business setting
  • Office headquarters is located on the 3rd Floor of an office building. Elevator is in good working condition but can be inoperable during times of repair or power outages
  • Position is located in Parsippany, NJ or remotely
  • Hours: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday; or as required by business needs
  • Travel: International and domestic; approximately 40%
Physical requirements:
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Able to lift 25 pounds
